Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a replacement for André Onana after reports scouts arrived in Portugal to investigate a Porto star.

Onana’s barrage of mistakes this season has cost the Red Devils on several occasions, including nearly knocking them out of the Europa League after a big blunder against Lyon.

His slip-ups even led former United captain Nemanja Matic to twice refer to the Cameroonian as one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history. Ruben Amorim has not ruled out recruiting for the position in the summer, with the latest rumours suggesting that is still the plan.

According to reports from Portuguese outlet Record via Sports Witness, scouts from both United and Roma went to the Estádio do Dragão to watch Porto star Diogo Costa in action.

Costa broke through Porto’s youth academy in 2017, signing his first senior contract with the Primera Liga’s B-team. However, he was called up to the first team in 2019, going on to keep a whopping 108 clean sheets in 266 appearances overall.

He is also a regular in the Portuguese national side, already racking up 34 appearances and was the main man between the sticks in the country’s 2024 Euro campaign.

The 25-year-old has been almost constantly linked with a move to the Premier League for several years now, with links to an Old Trafford move even going as far back as 2023.

Seemingly whenever United’s goalkeeping situation is raised from either De Gea or Onana, Costa’s name is brought up, however with Amorim’s Portuguese connection and his dwindling contact reducing his price this could be the summer the deal finally gets over the line.

But year-after-year the keeper’s performances have consistently improved and with two years left on his contract would set Man United back a hefty £33 million.

If Amorim does want the deal to go through this summer he would need to act fast with Manchester City also touted to be preparing a move for Costa as a potential replacement for Ederson.
